Episode 4 - Jungni Middle School
Since my hometown is located near to the industrial valley, the overall education level of the parents were very high. Almost everyone had studied for academic degrees, so as their parents, the children's eager towards learning were very intense too. Some newspaper even called our town as "Daechi dong of Daejeon". (Daechi dong is a town in seoul infamous for its superfluous aspiration to education) And this eager of us could be solidly supported by our parents' relatively stable income. Almost everyone of my friends attended to additional private academy after the school, spending tons of money there. We considered our daily life as a very normal, ordinary, and universal life circle of our peers in Korea. However, this thought was totally smashed ever since my mother was appointed to the new school, Jungni middle school.
My mother is a teacher in a middle school. She teaches music, and she seems to enjoy it. Actually, it is after the appointment to the middle school when she showed her genuine affection towards her job. Before the middle school, she worked at Tanbang middle school, a school located right in the middle of the metropolitan area. Just like our town, the parents in that town were very eager to their children's education too. Students there attended to private academies just like us. The problem was, that they were very indifferent at the school activities, and rather focused on the assignments of the academies. Actually, they relatively did pay attention to subjects like Korean, English, or Mathematics, since it actually somewhat took part in their school record and scores. However, in Music class, my mother could scarcely find students who payed attention to her class. Many of them rather took their assignments out and focused on it rather than paying attention to her voice. In this situation, she began to consider her job useless. At the very moment of desperation, she was appointed to another school, Jungni, and finally she recovered her confidence back. She said that she was astonished to the attitude of the students there. Every single student participated on the class actively, and fully payed attention to her class with their eyes widely opened. They were eager to take every class provided in the school, since they had no other chances to attend to private education institute.
